関東の歴史(れきし) Topography and Climate The Kanto Plain is the biggest plain in Japan. It takes up 40% of the region, and is used for various things, like farming and industrial, residential, and commerical construction. As for climate, the climate in Kanto is generally mild, and the seasons are sharply delineated. The winters are long and cool while the summers are humid and short.
In feudal times, 関東 was the main area where fedual power existed.
This is where the Tokugawa Shogun and Edo (current-day 東京) made their home.
Kanto was the military seat of power.
From the Meiji Restoration to the present, 関東 has been the center of modern development in Japan.
It houses Japan's seat of government, the largest amount of cultural institutions and universities, and has the largest population. 北関東:Tochiki, Gunma, Ibaraki

It's short distance from Tokyo (~100 km) makes it popular for people wanting to get away from Tokyo. Hakone Yumoto, Hakone's most famous hot spring Sample Visitors can enjoy the おんせん at a public bath house or a りょかん、even if one is not staying at a りょかん. A visitor would simply have to pay anywhere between 500-2000 yen for access. Lake あしのこ

とくがわいえやす かまくら これは Great Buddha Kamakura is a town in Kanagawa Prefecture that's roughly an hour south of Tokyo.
A popular tourist destination mainly due to the amount of temples and shrines with historical signficance.
Also popular during the summer due to the beaches!
The Great Buddha statue pictured above is 13.35 meters, making it the second tallest Buddha statue in Japan. つるがおかはちまんぐう Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine
Recieves over two million visitors during the New Year holidays. にっこう Nikko is a town north of Tokyo in Tochigi Prefecture.
Most famous for the Toshogu Shrine, which is the mausoleum of とくがわいえやす。

Toshogu Shrine いえやすの墓(はか) Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai りゅずのたき "Dragon Head's Waterfall" Sidenote: Best time to see the autumn colors come in is early October. おなかがペコペコです。 Of course, when one thinks about Japan, their mind probably immediately thinks about food. Let's examine a few dishes famous in the Kanto region. ゆば - bean curd layer (Tochigi)
Can be dried and wrapped around filings, can be added to stews or cooked dishes, or can be eaten with soy sauce and wasabi.
なめろう (Chiba)
Main ingredients are horse mackerel, sardines, flying fish, and Pacific saury or mackerel. The fish is cut into small pieces and miso, leeks, ginger, and green basil is added on top. みそパン (Gunma)
Bread with Miso Paste) みとのうめ (Ibaraki)
Sweet bean paste wrapped in shiso leaves which have been soaked in plum syrup かんこやき (Kanagawa)
Grilled Dumplings One sidenote: the food in Kanto is generally quite strong.
By strong we mean the seasoning (soy sauce, wasabi, etc) 地方の祭り(ちほうのまつり) ちちぶよまつり This festival is in Chichibu City in Saitama Prefecture and occurs during December 2-3. Floats are brought one kilometer from the Chichibu to an おたびしょ (resting place for a god). When they all arrive, 1800 fireworks are fired. しゅんきれいたいさい This festival takes place in Nikko on May 17th and 18th at the Toshogu Shrine. The festival reinacts the movement of Tokugawa Ieyasu's grave from Shizuoka prefrecture to Nikko by the march of 1,000 samurai. Kamakura Festival
This festival occurs at the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine from the second Sunday to the third Sunday of April. The festival revives the samurai society of the Medieval period. Highlights of this festival are the しずかのまい dance and やぶさめ、which is archers shooting targets on horseback. Dialect Luckily for you and for me, 関東べん is the standard 日本語 that we have been learning! However, when compared to other dialects (most notably 関西べん), it is more brisk, monotone, clipped, and places more emphasis on consonants. Useful Phrases えきはどこですか。
We clearly can't do everything in a day, so somewhere to sleep is definitely required! Options:
Hotel/Luxury Hotel
Capsule Hotel

For a more traditional Japanese experience, a りょかん or みんしゅく is preferred. Prices can vary depending on the amount of luxury deisred, but generally みんしゅくis for those on a budget. りょかん visitors recieve full treatment of Japanese hospitality, the ability to sleep on a futon, and the chance to enjoy おんせん、making Hakone and Nikko popular りょかん destinations. りょかん みんしゅく is like a cheaper version of a りょかん or a "bed & breakfast." Generally, you would stay in a family's room and be provided with a futon and meals. みんしゅく Another cheap option are youth hostels. They are generally safe, and cost around 2,500-3,500 yen a night. However, the generally have a pre-midnight curfew. Hostel ゆうめいな人(関東) 山下智久 (Yamapi) - NEWS

So it does relate to our presentation. :) Sources:
