Zack and Marta want to create a video game character. Marta's Uncle Carlos is a computer programmer. Carlos explains the concept of pixels to Zack and Marta. Think about a monitor as a coordinate graph... with an x-axis... and a y-axis. Ever pay attention to your screen resolution? It may be something like 1280 x 800 or 800x600. The first value tells the number of pixels along the x-axis... The second value tells the number of pixels along the y-axis. Really. Check it out sometime. From the Start menu, go to Control Panel and select "Adjust Screen Resolution." If you choose a smaller resolution like 800 x 600, look what happens. The icons all get larger...why? By increasing the scale of the graph, it's kinda like zooming in on the picture. The pixels are arranged to make the grid. The second value tells the number of pixels along the y-axis. The first value tells the number of pixels along the x-axis... The second value tells the number of pixels along the y-axis. The first value tells the number of pixels along the x-axis... So, remember, the pixels form a grid for a coordinate graph. "You'll have to tell the computer where to place your character by plotting some points according to the coordinate pair system. Line segments will connect the points, thus creating your character." He further explains, "You can make rules that will cause your character to change size and even move around the screen!" Carlos explains to Zack and Marta just how to place their character in a specific location on the monitor. "Let's practice on paper. We can create our character, then explore some rules so that we have the feel for enlarging, reducing and moving our character around." "Sounds like a great idea! Hey, you!" Yeah! You!
