Transcript of Princeton High School 9-12 Writing Program

Aligns with the new more rigorous Common Core State Standards
Offers more consistent Tier 1 instruction to Princeton students
Aligns with the program from the middle school - Code X - in order to maintain continuity and vertical alignment
Will help teach our students
how to write

The Task...
Find a Program That:
Model Units
10-12 Grammar Text
Alignment to Code X
A Curriculum Overview
Princeton High School 9-12 Writing Program

Common Core aligned programs for high school writing are in fledgling form and do not match our needed criteria - more workbooks than curriculum drivers
Most high schools assign writing and do not teach the art of writing
Additional Expectations for All Teachers:

Includes 100% of the Writing and Language Common Core Standards and teaches them in tandem
Will contain 12 writing cycle units - 3 per grade level - where 100% of students will be completing high level, college and career ready writing
Aligns to Code X by using a similar writing process and expanding upon the smaller writing cycle units embedded within it
Addresses the teaching of writing through Language and Writing Style study - each unit has both language and writing exercises aligned to the Common Core and to the writing type (argument, narrative, literary analysis)
9th grade: teacher created exercises
10th-12th: study driven by innovative grammar text
Princeton High School's Writing Program:
At least four "on demand" writing assignments throughout the school year - TBD per PLC and added to curriculum map
i.e. Practice OGT/PARCC prompts, in-class analytic essays as formative assessment, quote explications
Continued use of informal writing assessments such as reading logs and journals
Incorporation of ACT/PSAT prep as guided by data from practice tests
Continued use of Sadlier Vocab series and incorporation of these words into student essays
What we discovered through our research:
SO... WE DECIDED TO CREATE OUR OWN
Grammar instruction and the ACT
Sample - ACT English Test
NEW BOOK SAMPLE
RECAP:
SENTENCE COMPOSING COMBINES GRAMMAR INSTRUCTION WITH REQUIRING STUDENTS TO STUDY THE STRUCTURE OF GOOD LITERATURE.
THE ACT ENGLISH TEST REQUIRES STUDENTS TO ANALYZE THE STRUCTURE OF TEXTS
THIS APPROACH CAN IMPROVE STUDENT WRITING WHILE ASLO PREPARING FOR THE ACT.
