Walter 's Legacy Early Life 1954-1970 Walter Payton Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954 in Columbia, Mississippi. Walter's parents are Edward and Alyne Payton. As a little kid in middle school Walter was an active member of a lot of things. In high school Walter was asked to play football when his brother graduated high school. Walter agreed and he started to play football. He was unbelievable in high school. He broke a lot of records. The other team was so afraid of him that they started to run away from him when he got the ball. College Career 1971-1975 Walter Payton established himself as one of the best running backs, even though he didn't get any invitations from any Southeastern Conference colleges. So he decided to play football at Jackson State University where his older brother played at. While playing at Jackson State, Walter Payton rushed for more than 3,500 yards a season. He broke NCAA's rushing record by rushing 65 touchdowns during his college career. During college he got the nickname "Sweetness" because of his personality and playing style. The Glory Days 1983-1985 During these years the Bears struggled to assemble playoff wins, but the Bears kept trying and trying. The Bears record during these seasons were 8-8 or 10-6, but Walter continued his success. He also broke Jim Brown's career rushing record. Walter rushed for more than 12,312 yards which is amazing. Walter and teammates made a music video after making it into the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots. Professional Career 1975-1983 The Super Bowl 1986-1987 During the 1986 season the Chicago Bears had a tough season and they finally made it to the Super Bowl. Walter amassed 1,333 yards during the 1986 season. He was probably the best running back during the 1980s. The Chicago Bears dominated the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. The score was 46-10. Walter Payton didn't get that much yards in the Super Bowl because they knew who to stop. Walter Payton retired in 1987. Walter Payton started his professional career in 1975 with the Chicago Bears. During his rookie season he got off to a bad start. After a couple games, he started to loosen up. The final game of his rookie career against the New Orleans Saints was Walter's best performance. He rushed for 134 yards and 20 carries. After his first season he started to get more yards and carries. A Football Life Bibliography
