English 8B- Literary Analysis - Characterization and Theme
Project 1
For this project you will be writing a literary analysis on
A Tale-Tell Heart
. Our analysis must contain an examination of the core elements of fiction:
character, setting, and plot.
You must
show how these elements support the theme of the work.
Today we will discuss characterization and how to connect the characterization of the narrator to the theme of the story.

Objective- to investigate and understand the definition of characterization and how to apply it to A Tell-Tale Heart through analysis of theme.
What is characterization?
This is the way an author develops his or her character.
Direct Characterization- this is when an author directly tells you something about the character. "Charlie was a nice boy with brown hair and green eyes."
Indirect Characterization- we learn about the character through his/her actions, comments, or thoughts. Charlie yelled, "That's my toy and you cannot play with it," as he snatched the truck from his sister's hand.
Let's Practice
Theme is
the central topic of the piece of writing
- what is the author trying to convey to his/her reader through the story or narrative?
What is the THEME of our story?
What do we know about the narrator from The Tell-Tale Heart?
Mad?
"I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever."
Delusional?
"I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. It increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage."
Guilt ridden?
What does he do in the story to show us that he FEELS guilt for his crime?
Now- how does the characterization of our narrator lead to the theme?
