Alisa Narvaez Whats the problem? Whats the evidence? What causes the problem? What are the possible future effects of the problem? How does it effect people and/or the ecosystems of the Pacific northwest? What is being done to solve the problem? 1. The impact of bio-deposits (fish feces and uneaten feed). Bio-deposits from salmon farms settle onto sediments near the net-pens and can have definite effects on their chemistry together at the bottom of the ocean and that native living community.
3. The impact on non-target organisms by the use of therapeutic compounds (both
pharmaceuticals and pesticides) at fish farms.
Therapeutic compounds are used for the control of sea lice, both for the health of the fish and to reduce their potential as infectors, however the effects of these drugs on other life forms is unknown. Can fish farming adapt further to improve its environmental performance?
The aquaculture industry has a direct interest in a clean environment and aims to be a responsible producer, which requires the fish to be farmed in a sustainable manner. Major steps in this respect have been the reduction in the feed conversion ratio, health monitoring and improved husbandry systems. The fact that all cultivation of land or water has some effect on the naturalenvironment should be kept in mind. Throughout the process of improving the sustainability of the industry, we are in constructive dialogues with
environmentalists and governments.
How is fish farming regulated?
In all areas where fish are farmed commercially, governments have put
regulations in place. The aquaculture industry adheres to these regulations and continuously works with various levels of government to identify issues that may benefit from regulation and to ensure that operating practices remain current. In Canada there are three layers of regulatory process --at the municipal, provincial and federal level. In addition, the responsibility for regulatory enforcement is
sometimes split between departments of government within each level. In fact, fisheries departments, lands and forest department, agriculture and transportation departments, labour department worker safety requirements and a host of what can be usually termed as additional site specific local rules and requirements. Laws related to salmon fishing what you can do to help Genetically modified salmon is a controversial issue. Instead of salmon reaching maturity in 3 years it takes them 18 months with the added gene. The FDA has said the GM salmon are safe to eat and the y do not need to be labeled differently than non GM salmon in the store because they are not different enough. People are afraid of new allergies from the GM fish.
People are also afraid of a GM fish ecsaping and breeding with wild salmon messing up the gene pool and since they grow twice as fast they might out eat wild salmon. Farmed salmon are pumped with antibiotics. With the cramped conditions of the tanks the fish can easliy get diseases. There is also unhealthy and unnatural diets. Wild Salmon & Farmed Salmon Laws Farmed salmon are also contaminated with PCBs Fish Passage's are required at any obstructure in a stream or river.
Laws regulating human activities relating to land and waters.
Popular grocery stores like Costco, Albertsons, Safeway, Whole Foods... etc, are needing to label their fish quality (If the fish contains dye) or could be sued by customers who may recieve health issues after consuming. Issue being discussed by the California Supreme Court.
Salmon business has quintupled in 16 years, much of the demands are needed by farm-raised fish, which is why stores do not actively enforce the rule. Farmed salmon can also get sea lice, and the poison they use to kill the lice have a negative effect on the local crustations. 7-10 store bought salmon in Portland contain high levels of PCBs. Farmed fish They are fed artificial coloring Wild Salmon GMO
(Geneticaly Modified Organism) 2. The impact on bottom-dwelling ocean communities by the accumulation of heavy metals in the sediments below the fish farms.Both copper, from marine anti-fouling compounds used on the net-pens, and zinc, from fishfeeds, can be toxic in their ionic forms to marine organisms. The young salmon swim by the shore and the farming nets are located neaer the shore.
So young salmon swim by the nets and get sea lice that the other salmon have and it kills the young salmon because they are not old enough to protect themselves. With the wild salmon pop decreasing the commercial salmon fishing may be non existent. The salmon farms already make up 90% of the industry in the US. The farmed fish are fatter than wild salmon so you get less protien per serving. PCBs, fire retardants , pesticides (for the sea lice), antibiotics, copper sulfate (for of algae on the nets), and canthaxanthin (a dye that can cause retinal damage used to make gray farmed fish look like “wild” pink). Local fisherman have gone out of business. Sea lice Escapement Omega-3 fatty oils are lower in farmed salmon, because of the plant oils used in their feeds Dioxins are enviromental pollutants and are highly toxic and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, mess with hormones and also cause cancer Angler tags only allow 20 salmon. In Oregon, people 14 years old and older must have an Oregon fishing license for fishing, assisting an angler or taking any fish for personal use Catching a legal species while in possession of any species that isn't in season for a particular area is illegal.
Anglers can only keep fish that meet minimum lengths of 24 inches for Chinook and 16 inches for coho.
Regulations may change from year to year, so anglers should always check for the latest regulations. Choose Wild vs Farmed. Don't use pesticides on your lawn + garden. The pesticides they give farmed fish to kill sea lice. The feed they give the farmed fish is unnatural. Fear of farmed or GMO fish escaping Farmed salmon being less expensive than wild. Get informed. Be the voice of the fish Volunteer at a salmon center. Educate others of salmon issues. More salmon fishers will be out of business. If a farmed fish escapes into the wild it will create more compotition for food and can spread disease with wild salmon. An escaped farmed fish can also mess up the gene pool of the wild salmon. What Can We Do? From home we can plant trees, sweep walkways/driveways rather than hosing down, keep exhaust clean, water lawn/gardens carefully.
Less polution (Ride a bike, avoid getting chemicals into stream/rivers, clean up animal waste, refuse plastic bags).
Shop more local, minimize food production.
Purchase a salmon liscence plate.
Lay off Salmon fishing
Don't walk into Salmon eggs.
