Northwestern Mutual Internship
with the Bohannon Group Why me? Work Ethic I am a very driven, determined, and extremely hard worker who loves a little competition and will work hard to reach goals that I set for myself. When I put my mind to something, it gets done at a high level. I have learned how to work hard from my family, but mainly from playing high school sports such as football and hockey. Experience I have vast experiences working in different environments and settings with many different types of people. From testing missiles with experienced engineers in Huntsville, Alabama to promoting outside the Metrodome in the cold before a Vikings game with fellow KFAN interns, I bring many differing experiences to the table. Eagerness to learn With my varying experience, I have learned many things along the way. In my previous workplaces, the many different lessons and experiences have made me very diverse. This diverseness will be a key component of my success going forward in anything I do. I believe my eagerness to learn and striding to succeed at everything I do is one of the biggest assets I will bring to the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Social Skills I see myself as an extremely personable guy, that can not only succeed while working with many different types of people, but can also easily forge new relationships. I believe having these skills is a huge factor to a possible career in a field such as Financial Representation. Why Northwestern Mutual and the Bohannon Group? Culture From the moment I walked in the door for my first interview, the office had a different feel to it that I have never seen before. Coming from interviewing with the Columns Group, I could see a distinct difference in the people and atmosphere that I instantly loved. I felt a sense of community, everyone I met was very welcoming and seems to want the best for themselves and all of their peers. Reputation I was blown away to hear that the Bohannon group has had the top Northwestern Mutual internship program in the country for a couple of years in a row. Who wouldn't want to be a part of an organization like that? Opportunities The most important thing when I was searching for a summer internship was to be able to establish connections with people in the Twin Cities. Also to be in a situation where I am able to succeed, grow as a person, and as a professional. With Northwestern Mutual and the Bohannon Group, I am confident that both of these goals are well within reach. Experience From all the research I've done on the internship and Northwestern Mutual in general, I am confident that the experiences I have gained in the interview process and the possible experiences throughout the internship would be truly life changing. I have already learned so much about myself through the interview process itself, and it excites me to see how much I can possibly grow through the internship program. Market Survey Takeaways Diversity As I went through the market surveys, I quickly learned that every client is going to be different. Some people are very knowledgeable and some are going to rely heavily on you for genuine advice and guidance. This is where my diversity is going to come into play. In order to succeed in this type of career, it is obvious to me that being diverse with clients is a must. Expertise Every person I talked to in the market surveys said the number one thing they liked about their financial representatives is the expert knowledge they possess. I know this business can be complicated, but I feel top notch training combined with my eagerness to learn and succeed will ensure that I have the best knowledge possible, in order to provide the best service to my clients. Genuine Advice On the flip side, a large majority of people I talked to said they hated how some representatives were always trying to sell their products first instead of giving the clients the best honest advice while catering to their personal needs and goals. I believe being a good honest person with clients is huge in this business, and developing relationships in general. I believe this would come extremely easy for me given my personality and morals. Dealing with Rejection I am aware that in this business, rejection is just going to happen. Nobody likes rejection, but you just have to get up and get back at it. In high school I learned how to deal with rejection, (mainly with girls) and in football. In my four years, many factors such as injuries and better players gave me a sense of rejection. I learned at a young age how to deal with adversity and rejection, moving on, and make the best of each situation. I believe these experiences will help me immensely in this business. The Good Life Family Family is one the most important things to me. I am very lucky to have a tight knit family and I want to continue that tradition. Ideally I want to start a family in Minneapolis while working and just enjoying life. I love Minneapolis and want to stay here for a long time, despite the long, cold, snowy winters that I am not accustomed to. Being close to my extended family is another reason I would love to stay in Minneapolis after college. My Career My dream job has always been to work for the Minnesota Vikings, so ideally ten years down the road I would be running the show in Eden Prairie. If that doesn't work out, I want to be working in a field that I am very passionate about and can grow in. I want to be excited to go to work every morning and be proud of what I do but most importantly I want to be able to positively impact the lives of others through my work. Doing things I love I have many different passions, whether it be sports, friends and family, or just having a good time. Ideally, ten years from now I will be sharing those experiences and passions with my family. I can see myself taking my kids to a Vikings game on Sundays after going to church, going up to the cabin for the weekend, teaching my kids how to ski in the winter, and taking them to early morning hockey practices.
