La Vampirata Famous Women Pirates
While piracy was mainly a male activity or occupation, a significant number of historical pirates have been female. Mary Read
Caribbean pirate. Dressed as a man Mary went to sea and later joined the British army, fighting in the War Of The Spanish Succession. Mary married and settled down as a woman but returned to male dress following the death of her husband, later boarding a ship bound for the West Indies. Captured by "Calico" Jack Rackham, Mary joined his crew. In 1721, she died in prison. Woman pirates were not accepted as real pirates, not even by other pirates. " no boy or woman to be allowed amongst them. If any man shall be found seducing any of the latter sex and carrying her to sea in disguise he shall suffer death."
