Unconscious forces
Sometimes external cues in your environment (classroom, a test taking day, etc.) can trigger fear in a part of the brain (amygdala) and you may not even realize it but your brain does.

When your brain realizes it, it applies what happened in the past event that scared you and replicates the same tactics you used to get through that fear and difficult time.

We want you recognize these fears and tactics and see if we can modify them to be better.

Getting On Course
When you identify the things that are crippling you and your academic career, we can then establish a script to get back on course.

Script:
tells an actor what words, actions, an emotions to perform onstage.

Your life is a
script
and you and the people you hang out with are the
actors
. The reason we say this is because our
brain knows the lines
(or cues) to how to react to certain
scene
(situation happening) and it repeats it self over and over again just
like a play
being performed.

The Script
Script
has two parts:
1.
Patterns
a.
Thought patterns:
I’m too busy, I’m good at math, people different from me are a threat, I always screw up, the way we do things are around here is the right way so all other ways must be wrong, I can’t write.

b.
Emotional patterns:
Habitual feelings of anger, excitement, anxiety, sadness and joy

c.
Behavior patterns:
include habitual actions such as smoking cigarettes, criticizing others, arriving on time, never asking for help, and exercising regularly

2.
Core Beliefs:
The world is safe or the world is dangerous, ideas about different people, and judgments about ourselves.

How You Can You Rewrite
1. How others respond to you (classical conditioning).
You remember a time when you did something similar or the same in your actions and then you may react differently or the same depending on the response you received from that person after you said or did something.

You then will repeat the action if you got a positive response or you may not and approach the situation differently if you got a negative response

2. What significant adults say to us.
Attributions:
tell us how to react to a certain situation.
Good, quiet, rebellious, devoted, helpful, athletic, sexy, tough, independent, dependent, invisible, macho, dominant, competitive, smart, shy, or confident

Injunctions:
qualities that we are not or shouldn’t be.
Don’t be yourself, don’t talk back, don’t feel, don’t think, don’t be intimate,
don’t say no, don’t say yes, don’t get angry, don’t trust people that are
different from you, don’t show your feelings, don’t love yourself, don’t be happy, don’t be weak, don’t belief in yourself

after a significant adult told you something in the past and it stuck with you, then become attributions and injunctions maintained in your own thought process.

3. Observing the behavior of significant adults (social learning).
When you see an older adult do something and you replicate (or don’t replicate) the behavior or action because of the result that the adult or person you saw do it get.


Three Successful Rules
1. Show up
Plan to go to all of your classes. The teacher will give you hints to what is important and will be on the test or expects from your assignments. You won’t have to study as much because your experiential memories from learning in class.

2. Do My Best Work
Do the best you can do on everything that you try because then you don’t have an excuse for why you failed or could done better and you’ll feel better about yourself.

3. Participate Actively
When you are in class participate actively, it strengthens neural networks and you’ll remember more and have to study less.

Self-Sabotage
When you handicap yourself before you actually have the chance to try and succeed

You may do it when you underestimate your our ability to do something and then you bring your own abilities down to match your own beliefs

1. How well prepared are you?
Did you study enough.. If you did.. then be confident but not so confident that you don’t double check your answers or read through all the possible answers there are for the question. So, be confident but not overly confident.

2. How well do you take tests?
Sometimes tests don’t really assess intelligence. Sometimes people freak out and their true ability doesn’t come out on a test because they are so nervous. You then have to figure out a way to de-stress or something that brings out your abilities at it’s maximum potential.

3. How much have you learned from previous tests?
By the second or third test, you should almost know completely what you would be tested on from the questions you were asked before on previous test(s).

9. Answer true/false questions
a. if part of the statement is false, then the answer is false
b. if the statements have absolutes (unconditional) words like always, never, etc.
most likely it’s false
c. if the statements are conditional, then there is a higher chance that the
statement is true.
d. if the statement had two negatives then cross out the two negatives and see if
the sentence makes sense. If it does then it’s most likely true
e. if the sentence contains you never heard of then, guess false
f. if your are purely guessing; then guess true because it’s harder for anyone and
professors to write a false statement.

10. Answer multiple-choice questions.

11. Answer matching questions.

12. Answer fill-in the blank questions.

13. Answer questions that ask for a list.

14. Answer short-answer questions.

15. Answer definition questions.

16. Answer essay questions.

17. Solve math problems

18. If you get stuck, move on.

19. If you feel anxious, refocus

20. review your answers

21. provide an answer for every question

22. proofread. Don’t even think of handing in your test yet.

23. reward yourself.

24. study the instructor’s feedback.

25. correct answers you missed.

26. analyze your errors.

27. get help.

28. seek accommodation.
