Lennon was shot dead outside of his New York apartment. The gunman, Mark Chapman,had previously asked Lennon for an autograph. Only hours later, Chapman set out to kill Lennon.
-The FDA received first IND submission for treatment in 1982. AIDS was found to be caused by HIV in 1985, and in 1987, the FDA required screenings for all blood and plasma collected in the US.
1st Woman in Supreme Court: July 7
-Reagan nominated Sandra Day O'Connor to be on the Supreme Court. On September 21, she won the unanimous vote and was sworn in on September 25, 1981.
1st Personal Computer:
-IBM introduced the 1st PC at a starting price of $1, 565. It was able to hook up to the home T.V. set, play games, and process text much faster than earlier machines.
-Reagan announced his "Star Wars" defense which worked to intercept enemy missiles before they hit ground.
1st woman in space:
-Sally Ride was an American physicist and astronaut. At age 32, she became the 1st American woman to enter Earth's surface.
-A team of American and French researchers reported to have found the wreckage of the Titanic. More than 73 years after the "unsinkable" ship went down, the biggest and most luxurious ship of its time was found.
DNA:
-Professor Alec Jefferys discovered that each person has a distinct fingerprint. DNA obtained from crime scenes in 1983 and 1986 proved that the same man raped and killed two young girls and was the first time DNA was used to solve crimes.
-In November 1986, Reagan confirmed reports that the US had secretly sold arms to Iran. Reagan claimed the goal was to improve relations with Iran; however, American hostages were released. He later stated the facts and evidence that were given to him were false.
-The fall of the Berlin Wall represents the end of the Cold War and the fall of the USSR. German citizens dismantled the wall which had divided Germany for almost 30 years.
