How Technology Provides Positive Cognitive Development in Children
WHY? What are the benefits?
Scaffolding = The guidance or support given to a child by a person who is more skilled and who can adjust the guidance offered according to the child's level of performance.
Software programs can provide extensive scaffolding of learning, which we know is very important in developing cognitive skills. For example: Computers allow children to access the internet "the largest information bank-with the broadest range of quality and utility- the world has ever known." The parent and teacher can offer some guidance, but ultimately allow a child to accomplish tasks on their own, at their own pace, and work on self direction.
Through the use of technology, children can learn technology skills, and enhance social and cognitive development.
As a tool, computers, recordings, audio, cameras, photos, TV and videos have several advantages that can aid in children's cognitive development.
We are living in such a technologically advanced time, and it's a rapidly changing one at that. Children are growing up with digital devices and this has had an impact on the daily life activities and communication methods.
Young children are spending increasing hours on TV, computers, smartphones, tablets..etc; Hence, we can harness these tools and wisely implement them to enhance positive cognitive growth both at home and school.
Kids are actively learning and building an understanding of the world by experiences, interactions and observations. So with technology (when used appropriately) we can help children explore, experiment and create.
We know that Play is an important part in intellectual development.
Technology such as computers, can really help build greater motivation and give them opportunities to discover, make choices and find out the impact of decisions they make.
How can we implement technology? in our children's lives?
To help build on cognitive development, social and adult-child relationships, you can view digital photos, using Skype to have interactions with loved ones, viewing e-books together with your child, and engaging with some interactive apps.
By drawing, making a picture, playing a game, recording a story, taking a photo, making a book, or engaging in other age appropriate activities helps a child communicate ideas and feelings, and investigate the environment.
Screen media can expose children to animals, objects, people, landscapes, activities, and places that they cannot experience in person.
Technology can also help children share their real-life experiences through many avenues like images, videos, and sounds; moreover, save them and revisit them whenever they'd like.
The best academic results are found when the use of technology is clearly related to other classroom/home activities and curriculum. For example: When children are using a software program that manipulates items, the teacher/parent implements the the concrete items into classroom/home activities. This increases children's skills more than using the computer alone.
Technology offers new opportunities for educators to build relationships, maintain ongoing communication, and exchange information and share online resources with parents and families. This also allows parents and families to use technology, ask questions, seek advice, share information about their child, and feel more engaged in the program.
You can provide a balance of activities. You can extend and support active, hands-on, creative, and authentic engagement with those around them and with their world.
For example: adding new languages to classroom labels, translating key words in books and games, or providing models for the writing area, technology can help adults and children hear and practice accurate pronunciations so they can learn one another’s languages.
Another example: Drawing on a touch screen can add to children’s graphic experiences and their representations while manipulating colorful shapes on a light table allows children to explore many colors and
and their shape.

Negative aspects? Risks?
The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated and continues to recommend that children under the age of 2 should not have ANY screen time. That any children older than two should not have more than two hours per day of technology use.
Many studies have shown that increased screen time has negative affects like ADD, behavioral problems, higher psychological difficulty scores, less physical activity and imaginative play, obesity, irregular sleeping, poor academic performance, and violence.
BOTTOM LINE - There needs to be a balance and good correlation between technology and educational concepts. They need to work together to reinforce important concepts at home an school.
