Transcript of Neuroscientist

Neuroscientist/Neurobiologist
What is a neuroscientist?
a highly trained scientist who studies the structure , molecular chemistry, function, and pathology of the brain and nervous system
History of Neuroscience
The study of the nervous system first began in ancient egypt.
Types of Neuroscience
Molecular
includes the study of ion channels, receptors, and enzymes to understand neural function
Cellular
Cellular neuroscience studies the mechanisms that neurons use, it is the study of neurons at a cellular level.
Affective Neuroscience
This branch of neuroscience studies the neural mechanisms of emotion
At around 1700 B.C.
The egyptians practiced drilling or screwing a hole into the skull to cure headaches of mental disorders.
Education
4 years of undergraduate studies

Cellular Neuroscience
Affective Neuroscience
Cognitive
Molecular
Molecular biology studies how (RNA) derives from (DNA) and how protein derives from RNA
and obtain a bachelor of science or Bachelor of arts degree
After that, graduate school where you recieve a Ph.D. and specialize into a subfield.
What do Neuroscientist actually do?
Neuroscientist try to answer these basic questions similar to these:
How drugs affect the brain?
Why do we sleep?
What causes and what are the treatments for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, schizophrenia?
What about pain, memory, stress, emotion, consciousness?
Cognitive Neuroscience
The study of the cognition of the brain, it focuses on the neurons and its mental processes
Work Distribution
34%- work in universities as professors
28%- work in research
12% are employed in pharmaceutical areas
26%- are employed by the government
Salary
Beginning neuroscientist make $68,900-75,000 a year
Fun Fact:
Michael Gazzaniga and George Miller, coined the word "neuroscientist" while sharing a taxi ride together
While more experienced neuroscientist make around $100,000 a year
What does a brain do when it sees a friend across the street?
Gives it a brain wave
What works even after it is fired?
a neuron
What happens when a neurotransmitter falls in love with a receptor?
You get a binding relationship
