Presented by Dr. Charles Best UNHCR club

WHY DID THE REFUGEES LEAVE?
By fleeing their country, they leave behind their
houses
, their
jobs
, their
money
, and their
clothing

Most of them don’t have
food
,
water
or any other basic needs that we are provided here in Canada.
In the Universal declaration of human rights, it says that "Everyone has the right to a food, clothing, housing and medical care...."
Lost ability to go to school, Between
2.1 and 2.4 million
school-age children are not attending school. In Syria, 5,000 to 14,000 schools have been damaged
Some refugees have even lost their family members or friends.

WHAT HAVE THE REFUGEES LOST?
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
WHAT IS THE UNHCR?
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

•World’s leading organization helping and protecting people forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict and mistreatment.

•UNHCR provides
shelter
,
food
,
water
,
medical care
and other life-saving assistance to refugees around the world.

•Since its formation by the United Nations General Assembly in 1950, UNHCR has helped millions of refugees restart their lives and has received two Nobel Peace Prizes.
War
in Syria shows no signs of ending
Homes have been devastated, families torn apart, and their is little chance for
peace
Since the beginning of the war- more than 320,000 Syrians are dead and 1.5 million plus people are wounded or permanently disabled
About 12,000 of the dead people are children
Many get extremely sick because of
diseases
and
malnutrition
Their health care and education systems
don’t
work properly at the moment

There are a

lot
of refugees coming over to Canada at the moment, but have nothing with them, and you can help them!
A simple thing you can do is donate
clothing
(gloves, jackets, sweaters, shirts, pants)
You can also donate
money
to us, which will go towards helping all the refugees get shelter, clean water, food, medical care, and hygiene products.
If you ever see a refugee in our community, make sure to help them feel
welcome
to our country, and be friends with them
Write a homemade “Welcome to Canada”
letter
filled with best wishes

Thank you
for listening :)
WHAT IS A REFUGEE?
TIME FOR A
SMALL

ACTIVITY!

Refugees
are people who have to leave their home, school, friends and family because where they live is no longer safe for them. Usually it is because they have fear of being mistreated due to their
race
,
religion
,
membership
of a particular group or opinions

There were
19.5 million
refugees worldwide at the end of 2014

51% of refugees were
under 18 years old
Many refugees have to take a long and hard journey to be able to leave their country, where they spend months, or even years in camps, and sometimes get separated from their family on the way
Most have no
food
,
water
, or
healthcare
Their goal is to live in a country like
Canada
where it is very safe and every citizen has the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and peaceful association.
