ociety for
With the growing advancement of technology, it is time that teachers begin to rethink education.
The ISTE standards for teachers are separated into 5 categories.
Effective teachers model and apply these standards for students as they create, implement and measure learning experiences. (International Society for Technology in Education, n.d.)
Integration of these standards help with student engagement and improve learning experiences.

Standard #1
Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Standard #1: Substandard D
Standard #2
Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
ISTE Standards for Teachers

Teachers use their knowledge of the subject matter along with their knowledge of technology to help enable experiences that improve student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

What does this mean and look like in a classroom or virtual learning environment?
Standard #1: Substandard B + C

This standard asks teachers to "design, develop and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources."
This can help maximize student learning within all subject areas
Allows for students to develop knowledge and skills identified in the ISTE Student standards
Standard #2-Substandard A
Incorporate relevant learning experiences that include digital tools to promote learning and creativity.

Standard #1- Substandard A
Teachers are to
, and
creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
Have students create Powerpoint presentations or a Prezi.
Allowing student choice can help promote student interest.
B.Involve student' interest by "exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources".
In other words, make what students are learning relevant to their world or the world around them.
For example, offer assignments that encourage students to research issues on local news websites, then have students work on a group project that discusses solutions or ways that they can help.
C. In order to help promote students thinking, teachers can reveal and clarify for students’ conceptual understanding through the use of collaborative tools.

Example of ways to use digital tools as a collaborative piece could include the use of google docs, in which all students have access to editing the document. This allows for students who may have to miss school due to an illness another opportunity to participate.
Teachers can model their collaborative familiarity by engaging in learning with students. They can also model how they collaborate with colleagues and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
Example: Through the use of google docs, a teacher can pose a reflective question to encourage student participation online. Students can then freely answer and post questions to their peers on this document.
Standards 2 Substandard B-C
B. Develop a learning environment that provides ample time to integrate digital tools to help students pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.

C. Teachers should also be able to differentiate learning activities while using technology in order to address different learning styles and abilities.
Not every student learns in the same way, attending to a variety of learning styles would be appropriate when incorporating technology.
Perhaps teachers can gain knowledge about students interest with a class questionnaire.
Then the teacher can use this knowledge to incorporate technology lessons that spark student interest while also providing extra services to those students who may not be as technology savvy as others.

D. Give students a wide range of formative and summative assessments that align with content and technology standards. Use this data to update future lessons.
For example set up opportunities for students to take assessments online. Many companies such as Pearson and Harcourt already provide this service for teachers and students during their contractual years of use. Having students take assessments online gives them an opportunity to practice what was taught in class.
