Marlow's Journey in the Heart of Darkness
by:Briana Bell
Beginning of the Journey (London, England

Here we meet Marlow and understand the
concept of a frame structure. This whole time
the narrator is listening to Marlow's journey.
Keep that in mind because Conrad will switch
from Marlow talking to the narrator
talking.
Along the coast are the black people-"enemies". Marlow begins to questions how are these people enemies.
Outter Station
At the Central Station, Marlow meets the Accountant (who symbolizes the company) and he hears positive comments about Kurtz
“They were dying slowly—it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now—nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom.” Part 1
Central Station
Sadly, when Marlow arrives at the Central Station, his ship had been sunken by the Station Manager. Upon arrival, Marlow notices how everyone is sitting around waiting for ivory. This is, also, the first time Marlow hears a bad comment about Kurtz
The Heart of Darkness
Inner Station
We find out that Kurtz took a high seat amongst the devils and the natives worshipped him. Kurtz had become "one of them"- a savage. Kurtz doesn't want to leave this place, but going back to Europe he dies.
The day you decided to do something you know was wrong, was the day you decided to shake hands with the devil.
Back to Belgium
He goes back to Belgium to lie to the Intended, who isn't able to handle the truth. Once he is back, the wisdom that he gained helped him to realize that the city was "whitted sepulchre".
MENTAL STATE: NONEXISTENT
Has he gone mad?
What is savage?
Was Kurtz wise or a lunatic?
Civilized or no civilization?
Darkness and Light
Darkness= Uncivilized and ignorance
Light= civilization and wise
What makes a place a civilization? Policemen, firemen, judges, and lawyers? Do the people living within a nation make the nation civilized/not civilized?
"The horror! The horror!"
