Is it Considered to be Art?
One of the big questions is what constitutes something to be considered art?
The Various Definitions of Beauty
The Darwinian Theory
The Darwinian Theory States that we as humans see beauty as a response to our human existence, and solely our need to find mates, and continue our survival. We find beauty in things that benefit the human species.
The Rain Song
I have chosen The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin as my subject of beauty. This song was released in 1973 on their 5th album, Houses of the Holy. The song was written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. Page brought the arrangement of the melody and all instrumental parts and Plant was able to write the lyrics. This is an example of beauty.
The Rain Song is Beautiful
The reason that I personally find the Rain Song so beautiful is the emotional response that I receive from listening to it. I love the instrumental portions of the song, as well as the lyrics. For me the song tells a story of why love is beautiful, and how it makes you feel. Overall I think that this song has beautiful meaning, as is portrayed beautifully. All music is beautiful in my opinion, but this song is special.
For example, he sees that the ideal pictorial landscape contains an open vista, water source, forked tree, wildlife, and a path leading into the distance. These are necessary because they are what would have appealed to our hunter gatherer ancestors. Therefore we find it beautiful.
Merriem Webster dictionary defines art as: "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power."
In this definition of art, it makes the correlation that all art is beautiful.
1. The definition of beauty is the quality that provides pleasure to the senses or to the mind by behavior or attitude.
2. The function of beauty is to give purpose to life.
3. The conception of beauty is just an evolutionary tool passed down through generations.
4. Something that is a combination of features or qualities that appeals to an individual based on personal taste and societal values.
5. Beauty is anything that appeals to the 5 senses based on your personal preferences or societal preferences. Everyone's view of beauty is different.
This song is beautiful because it proves unique skill as also defined in the Darwinian Theory of beauty. The theory states that we are attracted and find things beautiful that our ancestors would see as something that requires a lot of unique skill. This song would because of the unique and beautiful instrumentals as well as the lyrics describing love. The song is a creation that required skill as well as emotional connection.
An example given was that we are attracted to something like arrow heads because that's what our ancestors created in order to attract mates. They used these because they required unique skill to create. Musical talent is another skill which is used to impress, therefore offering beauty in the creation.
I would agree with this definition of art, and would also categorize The rain song to be art as it is an original creation and requires immense skill and has an emotional power to it. I believe that all art is beautiful due to the fact that the creator put their feelings and emotions into the creation, and therefore has a part of themselves into any piece of art, music included.
A lot of these definitions mention that beauty is seen differently depending on different people. In other words, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The second definition though, states that beauty offers purpose to life. As I mentioned earlier, I see all music to be art, therefore all beauty. In my life, music does give me the most purpose in this world, and therefore this song also agrees with this definition.
