ERIN HENDRY, RACHEL LAWRENCE,
CATIE MCGEE, & TYLER DEFORD WHAT IS THE PUPROSE OF
THE GREEN ROOF? SUB-QUESTIONS PURPOSE OF RESEARCH AS STUDENTS OF CENTRAL MICHIGAN
UNIVERSITY, WE HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO
THE GREEN ROOF FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. Data Gathered PROCEDURE To gather information, we first observed the green roof and noticed that there were different types of plants. Results of Research What is the purpose of the green roof?
The purpose of a green roof is to absorb water and reduce storm run-off. This keeps the building cooler and shields the roof materials from ultraviolet light which extends the roof life. BASED ON THE PURPOSE, WHY ARE
EACH TYPE OF SPECIES THERE? WHAT MAKES THE ROOF
GREEN? WE WANTED TO UNDERSTAND THE GENERAL
PURPOSE OF THE GREEN ROOF AND WHY THE
UNIVERSITY CHOSE TO BUILD THE EHS IN A
GREEN MANNER. From our time on the green roof we constructed different questions aiming towards the general purpose of the green roof. Secondly, we wrote up questions to ask the men and women who were responsible for the construction and creation of the green roof. Then, to find more information from the answers given we used the internet. BASED ON THE PURPOSE, WHY ARE EACH TYPE OF PLANT SPECIES THERE?
On the roof there are 11 varieties of sedum. These survive with less water and their soil is resistant to heat, cold, and draught.
For the first two summers, maintenance used drip irrigation which allowed it to establish itself. WHAT IS THE LEED CRITERIA THAT CMU FOLLOWED? WHAT MAKES THE GREEN ROOF GREEN? A roof, deck or other structure onto which vegetation is intentionally grown or habitats for wildlife are established. Also, sustains environmental costs for said building http://www.greenroofguide.co.uk/introduction/ What is the LEED Criteria that CMU followed? The LEED is:
Internationally recognized green building program
Provides framework to implement green building design
To become a LEED building one must fulfill all prerequisites and 40/110 on LEED rating system scale LEED: U.S. Green Building Council Ecological Benefits Reduces dust and smog particles:
Green roof vegetation helps to filter out dust and smog particles.
Nitrates and other aerosol contaminants are absorbed out of the air and rainfall and bound within the soil.

Natural Habitat for Animals and Plants:
Green roofs create biodiversity, encouraging wildlife, such as birds, butterflies and insects, to remain within urban areas.

Mitigates Urban Heat Island:
Cools and humidifies the surrounding air creating a microclimate which has beneficial effects within the immediate area. Ecological Benefits Technical Benefits Storm water retention:
Depending on the design, a green roof can typically reduce storm water run-off by 50 to 90%.

Additional thermal resistance:
Green roofs can improve the thermal resistance of the roof assembly throughout the year, especially in summer months by helping to reduce cooling costs.

Reduced noise levels:
Typical extensive green roofs reduce reflective sound by up to 3 dB and improve sound insulation by up to 8 dB. http://www.hydrotechusa.com/benefits.htm Technical Benefits Questions that we asked the builders:
What is the purpose?
What makes it green?
Why are each type of species there? LEED cont. Credits to satisfy green building requirements
Sustainable sites credits
Water efficiency credits
Energy & atmosphere credits
Materials & resources credits
Indoor environmental quality credits LEED on New Construction for Schools focuses on:
Classroom acoustics
Master planning
Mold prevention
Environmental site assessment Owner Benefits Increased Life Expectancy of the Roof
Protects the roof membrane from climatic extremes and physical abuse

Additional Usable Space

Building Incentives
More and more municipalities and other government agencies are providing incentives that can help off-set the cost of a green roof
