About Constellations

Constellations were invented,not discovered.
Constellations are totally imaginary they are things that poets, farmers and astronomers have made up over the past 6,000 years ago.
The purpose for constellations is to help tell which stars are which.

Continue..... About constellations.

On a really dark night, you can see about 1000 to 1500 stars.
Trying to tell which star is which is hard.
The constellations help by breaking up the sky into more managable bits.

What are stars made of?

This is one of the questions that we included in our brainstorm.
Stars are basically, a massive, luminus ball of plasma that is held together by gravity.
(plasma is an ionized gas, ionized means to separate or changein to ions)

For the mission to mars assignment we are researching
Constellations are the main subject of our researching of stars.
Kim and I Have made a
video explaining about shooting stars.

Enjoy!! In modern astronomy, a constellation is an iternationally known assigned area of the celestial sphere.

Historically, constellations were also used to refer to a pattern formed by visual stars within proximity to one another. The deffinition for constellation, on dictionary.com is:

Any of various groups of stars to which definite names have been given, as Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Boötes, Cancer, Orion.

The 3 closest stars to earth are:
1. The Sun at 93 million miles.
2. Proxima Centauri at 4.2 light years.
3. Alpha Centauri at 4.3 light years.

The colour of stars depends on the temperature. The colours range from blue, white, red and even gold.

That you can measure the angles in the sky with your hand!

Sizes of stars.

The sizes of star depend on thier mass, their energy output and their surface temperature.

The largest stars are red (cool) supergiants. They are about 1000 times bigger than the size of the sun.
The sun is about 100 times the size of the earth.

A star begins as a collapsing cloud of materials, composed by mostly hydrogen and helium with small amounts of heavier components.
