GOLD -people wanted money!
GLORY - people wanted to be famous!
GOD - people wanted to spread Christianity!
Who was Christopher Columbus, and why was he important?
An explorer, supported by Spain, searching for western route to western coast of Asia (Indies and China) BUT he landed in North America

What was the
ian Exchange?
The settlement Columbus established began EXCHANGING goods with Europe.
So...Where did the English colonies come from?
England becomes jealous of the $$ Spain is making
Their first colony fails; everyone disappears!
But then...Jamestown is founded in
Was Jamestown successful?
After their leader John Smith returned to England, they settlers faced many hardships.
Only 60 of the 214 settlers survived the "Starving Time" of the first winter.
Jamestown eventually becomes profitable by cultivating (growing!) tobacco.
