Nat's Adventure: The Nutrition Guessing Game
Transcript of Nat's Adventure: The Nutrition Guessing Game
Minerals are a class of nutrients that are chemical elements that are needed for certain processes.
They include things like Chromium (regulates blood sugar), Iron (necessary for hemoglobin production), and potassium (needed for maintenance of fluid balance, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle contraction).
Vitamins are a class of nutrients that contain carbon and are needed to maintain health and allow growth.
They can be fat soluble like Vitamin A (keeps skin and eyes healthy and keeps bones/teeth healthy) or water soluble like B5 (needed to produce energy from carbs, fats, and proteins).
This is Nat. He needs to get to the nutrition chest and claim his prize.
Can you help him?
Carbohydrates are class of energy giving nutrients that includes sugars, starches, and fibers.
Sugars, the simplest form of carbohydrates, circulate in your blood and provide cells with a single-unit sugar called glucose. They are found naturally in fruits and are added to other foods like soda or cake.
Starches are a type of complex carbohydrates. They are broken down into sugars and are found in vegetables (like potatoes), legumes (like beans), and grains (like the ones used to make toast!)
Fibers, a carb that provides little energy and can't be digested, keeps intestines healthy and may prevent colon cancer & heart disease.
Proteins in the body help build new cells and repair existing ones.
There are two types of fat: saturated (fats made up of saturated fatty acids like butter and ice cream) and unsaturated (like those in plants and tend to be liquid at room temperature!

You lose a large amount of water by evaporation through breathing, through your skin, and as your sweat.
Drink 8 glasses a day.
