and His Dream
Born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga
Attended Morehouse College at the age of 15
He earned a Doctorate in Theology and worked as a Minister
Civil Rights Activist in the 1950s-1960s
Who is Martin Luther King Jr?
THE INJUSTICE: The Country was divided --African Americans were treated unfair.
Schools were segregated.
Black and white kids could not play together.
They had to sit in the back of the bus.
They could not use the same water fountains as whites.
They could not eat in the same restaurants
They did not have the same rights as whites.
What injustice did he try to make right?
Martin Luther King Jr. wanted ALL people to be united under one race--The Human Race--and not be divided by the color of our skin.
He wanted black and white children to be able to hold hands
He wanted ALL people to have access to the same bathrooms, water fountains, the same rights for everyone
He wanted ALL to be Free!!
What was MLK's Dream?
He led the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s-1960s
He believed in civil disobedience--to fight in a non-violent way against unjust laws
In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat in a bus up to a white man. MLK led the Bus Boycott of the public transportation system
1963 he led the March on Washington. Over 250,000 people joined the march support the civil rights movement to end segregation. MLK gave his famous speech "I have a dream".
Even though Mr. King and those that participated in the Civil rights movement were thrown in jail and victims of violent acts, they would continue their mission to bring equality to all races.
He was assassinated April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN. He was shot and killed by James Earl Jones.
What did Martin Luther King Jr. do to achieve his dream?
The March on Washington and his "I have a Dream" speech were successful.
In 1964, the Civil Rights Act passed.
All races had equal rights.
Even though MLK is no longer with us, his dream still lives on: Barrack Obama is our first African American President!
