Photovoltaic cells are solar energy. It can be used to power anything from small electronic devices up to homes and large commercial businesses.
Photovoltaic energy is renewable because it is solar energy which is energy from the sun. The sun is a renewable energy resource.
The average price for photovoltaic energy (solar panels) can range from $100 to thousands of dollars with about 7,000 installations per year in the U.S.
The main benefit of photovoltaic energy is that it does not emit any air pollution.

Benefits and Drawbacks
Solar energy is created by allowing photons, or particles of light, to knock electrons free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity. Solar panels actually comprise many, smaller units called photovoltaic cells. (Photovoltaic means they convert sunlight into electricity.) Many cells linked together make up a solar panel.
Creating and Storing
The only pollutants of solar panels come from the construction. Factories that make solar panels emit some greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2).

Solar panels are currently used all over the world with Germany, Italy, China, and the USA being the top users of solar energy.

A drawback is that the energy used in the construction of solar panels overtime is bound to emit some kind of greenhouse gases.
The energy is collected and stored during the day (when the sun is out) mainly to be used at night.
