injury or damage that changes the structure of the tissues or organs 3 types of lesion
PRIMARY LESION
CYST
A closed sac, with fluid above or below the skin
MACULE
A spot or discoloration on
the skin,such a freckel.
Small pimple without pus.
An inflamed pimple
containing pus.
Large pimple without
pus.
Solid lump above,within or
under the skin
A swelling,abnormall
cell mass.
Nodules are tumors but smaller.
Small watery blister.
"herpes simplex,chickenpox."
An itchy,swollen lesion
that last only a few hours.
"hives or bug bites."
PRIMARY LESIONS
My Puppy Went To The Vet
By Cargo Plane.
-PRIMARY
-SECONDARY
-TERTIARY
PAPULE
PUSTULE
TUBERCLE
TUMOR
VESICLE
WHEAL
You may walk away from the beach with a suntan, but that's not all you're getting. Excessive sun exposure is responsible for most of the sun damage associated with aging skin. This sun damage accumulates slowly over time and starts at an early age.
SUN DAMAGE BUILDS OVER TIME
Do you know how the sun
rays damage your skin?
UVA rays of the sun reach the
skin in 2 diferents forms:

- UVA called "the aging rays"

- UVB called "the burning rays"
UVA rays weaken the collagen
and elastin fibers,causing wrinkling
and sagging in the tisues.

UVB rays cause tanning of the skin by affecting the melanocytes,"the cells of
the epidermis responsable for producing
MELANIN.
PRECAUTIONS T O
TAKE WHEN

EXPOSED TO THE SUN
wear protective lotion at least SPF 15
Avoid exposure during peak hours
10 am to 3 pm.
sunscreen used for proteccion should
be full to filter out UVA & UVB rays .
Wear a hat & protective clothing
when participating in outdoors
activities.
SECONDARY LESIONS
Crust :Scab on sore
Excoriation:skin sore produced
by scratching or scraping.
FISSURE:A crack in the skin
For example;chapped hands or
lips.
KELOID:A thick scar resulting
from excessive growth of fibrous
tissue.
SCALE:Epidermal flakes,dry or oil.
example dandruff.
SCAR:"CICATRIX"
Light-colored,raised
mark on the skin formed
after an injury or lesion of
the skin.
ULCER:an open lesion on the skin
accompanied by pus and loss of skin depth.
DISORDERS OF THE SEBACEOUS GLANDS
A COMEDONE:"blackhead"
Hair follicle filled with keratin
and sebum. Most frequently on the face."T ZONE".
When the comedo is exposed to the environment;it
oxides and turns black, when the follicule is closed
the sebum remains a white "whiteheads or closed comedones."
MILIA:"whiteheads".
small,pear-like masses in the epidermis, due to retention of sebum.
They can occur on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders.
ACNE:skin disorder,inflammation of
the sebaceous glands from retained secretions, and bacteria "Propionibacterium acnes "
occurs most on the face, back, and chest.
two basics types of acne:
-acne simplex.
THIS PROCEDURE IS DONE
IN A DRS. OFFICE "ONLY".
Bulla a large blister containing a watery fluid.
What ages the skin?
UVA and UVB rays Smoking Drinking Drugs Poor dietary choices
Sue Called Ed For Unknown Kinky Service
-acne vulgaris
Seborrea:caused by abnormal
increase of secretion from
the sebaceous glands.An oily
or shiny condition indicates the
precense of seborrea.
ASTEATOSIS:
Dry,scaly skin due to a deficiency
or absence of sebum, caused by old age and
exposure to cold.
ROSACEA:
called acne rosacea,characterized by
redness, dilation of the blood vessels and the
formation of papules and pustules.
The cause of rosacea is unknown, some factors are
known to aggravate the condition in some individuals.
spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, exposure to extremes of heat and
cold or sunlight and STRESS.
A STEATOMA:
Cyst or fatty tumor. It is filled with sebum and ranges in size from a pea to an orange. It is found on the scalp, neck, back, etc.
Lets review sebaceous and sudoriferous glands funtions and locations
DISORDERS OF THE SUDORIFERUS GLANDS

ANHIDROSIS:Deficiency in perspiration,
often a result of
fever or certain skin diseases.
It requires medical treatment.
BROMHIDROSIS
Foul-smelling perspiration usually
noticeable in the armpits or on the feet.
HYPERHIDROSIS
Excessive sweating, caused by heat or general body weakness.medical treatment is required.
MILIARIA RUBRA
Acute inflammatory disorder of the sweat
glands, eruption of small red vesicles ,also burning, itching skin,Its caused by exposure to excessive
heat.

INFLAMMATIONS OF THE SKIN
DERMATITIS:
Inflammatory condition of the skin
comes in various forms, such as vesicles or papules.

ECZEMA:
Inflammatory,painful itching disease
acute or chronic, many forms dry or
moist lesions.Its cause is unknown.

HERPES SIMPLEX:
Fever blister or cold sore,viral
infection very CONTAGIOUS.
the blisters appear on the lips,
nostrils or other part of the face.
PSORIASIS:Skin disease chracterized
by red patches, covered with white-silver scales
found on the scalp, elbows, knees, chest and lower back.
"IT IS NOT CONTAGIOUS."
OCCUPATIONAL DISORDERS IN
COSMETOLOGY
Frecuent contact with chemicals
can result in abnormal skin condition.
some stylist may develop allergies to ingredients
in cosmetics, antiseptics, waving lotions, tints etc.
These can cause eruptive skin infections known as:
DERMATITIS VENENATA.

PIGMENTATIONS OF THE SKIN
ALBINISM:
Congenital leukoderma or absence of
melanin pigment of the body, including
the skin ,hair, and eyes.Eyes are pink, the skin
is pinkish white and will not tan.

CHLOASMA:Increased pigmentation
on the skin in spots that are not elevated.
Also called liver spots.caused by cumulative
sun exposure.
LENTIGINES:FRECKELS
small yellow-to brown-colored
spots on skin exposed to sunlight.
LEUKODERMA OR VITILIGO:
Skin disorder characterized by light abnormal
patches;caused by a burn or congenital disease that destroys the pigment
producing cell.

ALBINISM:
Absence of melanin pigment
of the body, including the skin, hair and
eyes.

NEVUS:small or large malformation of the
skin due to abnormal pigmentation,commonly
known as birthmark.

STAIN:Abnormal or wine-colored
skin discoloration with a circular and
irregular shape.its permanent color due to
the presence of darker pigment.STAINS occur
during aging after certain diseases,after
disappearance of moles,freckels.

Tan:Change in pigmentation of skin
caused by exposure to the sun or UV rays.

HYPERTROPHIES OF THE SKIN
A Hypertrophy of the skin is an
abnormal growth of the skin.
KERATOMA:
A superficial,thickened patch of
the epidermis commonly known as callus.
caused by pressure or friction on the hands
and feet.if the thickening grows inward,it is called a corn.
MOLE:Small brownish spot,ranging
in color from pale tan to brown or
bluish black.Some moles are small
and flat, some others are raised and
darker in color.Large, dark hairs often occur in moles.ANY CHANGES IN
A MOLE REQURES MEDICAL ATTENTION.
SKIN TAG:Small outgrowth of the skin.
Skin tags occur most on the neck.
VERRUCA:Technical term for a wart,
It is caused by a virus and is
infectious. It can spread from one location to another."PAPULE".
SKIN CANCER
SKIN CANCER FROM OVEREXPOSURE TO THE SUN COMES IN 3
DISTINCTS FORMS,VARYING IN SEVERITY.
Basal cell carcinoma:Is the most common
type and the least severe.Characterized
by light or pearly nodules.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA:
is more serious than basal cell carcinoma and
often is characterized by scaly red papules or
nodules.
THE THIRD AND MOST SERIOUS
FORM OF SKIN CANCER IS
MALIGNANT MELANOMA
Characterized by black or dark brown patches
on the skin, uneven in texture, jagged or raised.
Appear on people who DO NOT receive regular sun exposure and are most commonly located on areas of the body that are not regularly exposed.it is the least common but THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPE OF SKIN CANCER.
Use the ABCDE checklist to
recognize skin cancer, look for changes in any of the following:
A: Asymmetry
B: Border
C: Color
D: diameter
E: Evolution
