We Need Lighten Up Charleston Over the past 30 years, America has seen a
dramatic rise in the incidence of diabetes,
heart disease and hypertension.

Each of these diseases have two critical risk factors in common: unhealthy eating and not enough physical activity. An initiative led by Mayor Riley that challenges our community to lose 100,000 pounds by April, 2013. Let's inspire people in the Charleston area to conquer obesity. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn't about short-term dietary changes. It's about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating, regular physical activity, and balancing the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses. Regular physical activity is important for good health, and it's especially important if you're
trying to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight. You don't have to
think of physical
activity as strenuous
exercise or boring
workouts. As a parent, you can help shape your
child's attitudes and behaviors toward physical activity. Make physical activity part of your
family's daily routine by taking
family walks or playing active
games together. More ways to motivate children to be active: Encourage participation among the people in your family, organization, church, workplace, neighborhood, even your Facebook friends. What can I do?

active lifestyle yourself. Instead of watching television after dinner, encourage your child to find fun activities to

Be positive about the physical activities your child participates in and encourage them to be interested in new activities.
