‘In design it is really important to not underestimate the importance of the hierarchy of what’s important and what’s not important. By removing the things that are all vying for your attention you have better interaction with the product.’
What is good design?
Design Hierarchy
‘With something like the iPhone, everything defers to the display. A lot of what we seem to be doing in a product like that is getting design out of the way. And I think when forms develop with that sort of reason, and they’re not just arbitrary shapes, it feels almost inevitable, it feels almost un-designed. It feels almost like, well of course it’s that way, why wouldn’t it be any other way’
Design Reasoning
'Simplicity is not the absence of clutter, that's a consequence of simplicity. Simplicity is somehow essentially describing the purpose and place of an object and product. The absence of clutter is just a clutter-free product. That's not simple.'

'It is very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better........
Being superficially different is the goal of so many of the products we see. A preoccupation with differentiation is the concern of many corporations rather than trying to innovate and genuinely taking the time, investing the resources and caring enough to try and make something better.'
Being Different
'There is beauty when something works and it works intuitively.'
Intuitive Design & Connectivity
- Not just the trees
- Successful projects incorporate landscape
architecture at the start
- Good design is defined and not flaky or unrealistic
- Landscape architecture is an opportunity
- Integrated approach to the external environment
