Bugis Why did they leave their home countries ? The Malays were "pushed" to leave their homeland.
Malay Archipelago :
They could not find work in their homeland.
Malay Sumatra, Java and Malaya :
To escape from the war-torn areas
Life in these war-torn areas was unsafe.
Others :
They missed their relatives who were in Singapore.
Often, they brought their families with them.
The Arabs :
Looking for better trade opportunities than what they had
had in their homeland. What drew them to Singapore ? Peace and stability.
Better jobs and business opportunities.
No restriction on immigration
Singapore was a free port.Traders did not have to pay for custom duties or taxes on goods. Trade :
