The Greek Gods Introduction Zeus Poseidon Hades Hera Ares Haphaestus Apollo Artemis Before the time of the gods, Titans, a race of giants, ruled the Earth. Kronos, the leader of the Titans, was foretold by the creators of the Titans, Gaia and Uranus, that he would have a son that would one day thwart him. Fearing the loss of his rule, Kronos decided that he would eat the children of him and his wife, Rhea.
This angered his mother Gaia so greatly, that when his last son, Zeus, was born, she swaddled a rock in a blanket and offered it to Kronos instead. He was sent to the island of Crete, where he spent his childhood. When he found out the truth of his terrible father, he set his brothers and sisters free by making Kronos throw them back up. The gods that were free included Hera, Poseidon, Hades, and Hestia.
