Corporate Sponsor Why Girls Don't Consider Careers in STEM When girls do have access to women in STEM careers, it encourages them to see that a STEM career doesn't only mean working in a male-dominated workplace. Girls want careers that help people and make a difference in the world. Even though girls have the same capabilities as boys in science and math, they begin to lose confidence and interest in STEM subjects during middle school and are less likely to take AP physics or computer science exams in high school. When teens do more hands-on activities, it results in a more positive perception of STEM. Girls like STEM! The creative and problem solving aspects of STEM interest girls. They want to ask questions and know how things work! Girls who are interested in STEM are high achievers who have supportive adult networks and are exposed to STEM fields. Encourage girls to ask questions, problem solve and use natural creativity through play. A gap exists between a girl interested in STEM and her decision to pursue a career in STEM. African American and Hispanic girls have high interest in STEM, high confidence, and a strong work ethic but have fewer supports, less exposure, and lower academic achievement than Caucasian girls. Recommendations Foster girls' confidence, self-esteem, and initiative and strong work ethic. Expose girls to people who have careers in STEM. Keep girls interested and engaged during those strategic points in their development. If you see an interest in STEM, support and encourage it! Show girls that what they want from a career can be achieved in the STEM field. IMAGINE
