How are the Northern lights caused? The Northern Lights are caused by millions of electrically charged particles travelling at high speeds in the sky. They collide with air particles along the magnetic field. The particle colours reflect what gases are in the atmosphere. Oxygen- Yellow/Green
Nitrogen and Oxygen mix- Red
Nitrogen - Blue
