Gender "Issues" in Music Education Kendra Nutting Gender Stereotypes Gender Bias Assigning traits and characteristics to specific genders Displaying one gender as superior/inferior to another Gender Roles Social Roles Choral Music Brief history Singing is masculine in American origin. Females were encouraged to sing when a need for better church singing became necessary. Over time, females began to outnumber males in choral music. Stereotype: "Singing is for girls." Bias: making chorus more masculine not less feminine Instrumental Music Brief history Women were expected to play instruments that were "appropriate" for them.
