Catherine has up and down feelings about her younger autistic brother David. She loves him, but she is always embarrassed by the way he acts and feels that her parents don't listen to her. She makes rules for him for his sake to be normal and for her sake to not be embarrassed. When a new girl moves in next door, Catherine wants to befriend her, but is worried that David might ruin her chances. Then Catherine meets and befriends Jason, a paraplegic who uses a book to talk, and she starts to realize that being normal is hard and probably unneeded.
Catherine wants to have a normal life, which is difficult because her brother has autism. She creates rules for him for his knowledge, and for her to not be embarrassed. She meets a paraplegic kid named Jason at the clinic they take David. A new girl move in next door and Catherine really wants to be friends with her but is scared about her reaction to David. They become friends soon.
