1. What are comets and what are they made of?
Comets are pieces of rock (carbon dioxide) orbiting our solar system
Ice, mixed with frozen carbon dioxide and other carbon based molecules.
2. Where do comets come from?
Comets come from two areas of our solar system: the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. Each of these areas contain billions of comets, in these areas there is so much room so the comets get no closer to each other than we on Earth do to the sun.
3. Why do comets have tails?
Comets have tails because when they orbit through atmosphere solar wind blows the particles off the coma (head of comet) , the particles that are the comet fly past the coma (head of the comet) and create a tail like shape.
4. What are comets tails made of?
Comet tails are made of particles that blow off the coma, by the solar wind that is created whilst the comet is orbiting. Basically the tails are made by the same particles as the coma of the comet.
5. How long are comet tails?
Comets tails can be as long as tens of thousands of kilometers. They vary in size depending on the mass of the comet.
6. What is the difference between a comet and a meteor?
A Comet is a celestial object orbiting through our solar system that has a tail and a coma and a Meteor is a small body of matter that enters our solar system and appears as a streak of light.
How did Halley’s Comet get its name?
In 1705 Edmond Halley published some work that included his calculations,(showing that the comets observed in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were really one comet. He predicted that same comet’s return in 1758.) The comet was sighted late in 1758, and passed the perihelion in March 1759, and was named in Halley’s honour.

4. Explain why comets will eventually “burn out”.
Comets don't actually 'burn out' as the term states, but they do disintegrate and fall apart over time. It takes a very long time for this to happen, but it usually happens when a comet nears to the sun or makes a sharp turn in its orbital pattern, that it loses some of its substance.
The Earth's orbit is a complete circle around the sun, centering it in its orbital path. Many comets revolve along more stretched-out ellipses with the Sun near one end instead of in the center like the earth’s orbit.
