Monday, February 17, 2014
Vol XCIII, No. 311
What would Batman do?
Is Batman using utilitarianism?
the ethical doctrine that virtue is based on utility, and that conduct should be directed toward promoting the greatest happiness of the greatest number of persons.
Ran out of time and the hospital was not fully evacuated. Death of many patients
Let's say the hospital was evacuated on time, now there was not enough equipment or room in other hospitals so after all patients still passes away.
The man that was saved is left with guilt for the death of the patients.
The enough funds so they city is left without the largest hospital.
Greatest Happiness Principle
opposite of,...
Actions are right in proportion as they to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness.
AU: " An act is right if, and only if, of those acts available to the agent in the circumstances, it would produce the greatest total net happiness."
RU: " An act is wrong if, and only if, it is contrary to a (possible) rule, such that were society to have a practice of enforcing that rule (formally or informally), this practice would maximize overall net happiness."
3 effects
To Whomever:
Even though killing the man would have brought greater happiness to more people, killing is wrong no matter. Which is why Batman and the police decided not kill 1 man in order to bring more happiness to other people.
The explosion of a hospital
would bring unhappiness
The death of many patients will
always be unhappiness, as well as
never having another hospital
More people would
be unhappy if the patients pass away in
the explosion.
Do you feel that Batman and the police made the right/wrong decsion based on utilirinaum?
