Why Should The Dressmaker of Khair Khana Be Added to the Global Issues Curriculum?
Teacher's Appraisal
When Watertown High School Social Studies teacher, Mr. Cerrato, was asked about The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, this was his response..........
For the Ones Who Oppose This Proposal
it sends out the wrong message
involves violence
doesn't teach a lesson to its' readers
terrorist groups never stand for anything good when involved with learning anyway
Project After the Book is Completed
In the story, the Taliban felt that Islam should be strict, women should have very limited rights, and men are the superior compared to others.
-create a poster that shows how you interpret your culture
Keep in mind......What is Culture?

Information on the Book...............
"A transporting, enlightening book...
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana
is a fascinating window on Afghan life under the Taliban and a celebration of women the world over who support their loved ones with tenacity, inventiveness, and sheer guts."
"This book provides an excellent insight of Afghani culture before and after the Taliban took over governing the country. it accurately describes the role of women and what they did to survive and adapt to the strict laws governing their behavior. I enjoyed reading this book." -Maggie H (Barnes and Noble Customer)
Our mission statement states that.
-Mission Statement
The learning community of Watertown High School is committed to fostering the skills, attitudes, and habits essential for life-long learners in a technological, multicultural, and global society. Students are encouraged, challenged, and expected to achieve their highest potential in order to become responsible citizens and productive members of society.

This book should be added to the 9th grade Global Issue, Middle East study, curriculum.
What Curriculum?
Some might say........
"This book should be added to the curriculum because, it demonstrates how women are oppressed by some governments in order to be kept inferior."
Just keep listening.....
The Book's Summary
Currently, in this curriculum we are missing....
Actress, Angelina Jolie was one of many celebrities to have read the book, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana. This is what she had to say about it......
"The Dressmaker of Khair Khana gives voice to many of our world's unsung heroines. Against all odds, these young women created hope and community, and they never gave up. This book is guaranteed to move you-- and show you a side of Afghanistan few ever seen."
-Yes it does talk about violence, but that is what makes up most of the world today, unfortunately
The Theme of The Book
The theme of the Dressmaker of Khair Khana is...
- to teach readers to never give up on hope
- to always believe in yourself
- to keep your dream alive no matter what is thrown in your way
- to know that you can always do something if you set your heart to it
- to understand that life is a journey for everyone
- to teach readers that no matter what is thrown in your path, don't let it stop you from following your dream and making the best out of what you have
"Brave young women compete heroic acts every day with no one bearing witness. This is a chance to even the ledger, to share one small story that made the difference between starvation and survival for the families whose lives changed." pg. 229
- the book teaches readers to follow their dreams
- terrorist groups are a sign of violence, but they are how most conflicts begin (need to learn about them to understand what the conflict is)
Must haves:

- culture name
- lots of pictures
- at least one other interpretation to compare yours to someone else's to see the difference
Be Creative!!
My Recommendation
This book will improve the education of students by......
giving them something to look at as a model in life
improve reading skills
finding new interest levels
- a great representation of how high schooler' s kept hope and stayed determined and got through these tough times for all women around them, at the time.
Book Trailer......
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana
is about......
the Sidiqi 's town has been raided by the Taliban government
the Taliban are very strict, wanted women to have very limited rights, men were to be superior to them, women couldn't go to school, and women had to wear a Chadri at all times
Kamila' s family had to be separated, to keep each other safe from harsh rules
Sidiqi girls were good scholars, school was basically their life
Kamila began a tailoring business to keep the girls occupied and support the family
word spread, soon many women came to their doorstep asking for work
Kamila was constantly expanding her business, getting more orders and workers
the tailoring business helped save lives, through a tough time
The Watertown High motto is D.R.E.A.M.
an activity that helps students relate to what they are learning
a real world example that involves kids in high school
something that stands as a model, promoting one to pursue their dream
