What?
How ?

Context
Iterative process
You have this great idea...
Now you have
TG access
Access to SSG and its tools
Now you need to transfer your data to the SSG
Log on to the graphical desktop,
"pull" or "push" your data to the SSG,
and start using SAS/SPSS/Stata
Your data has been prepped on the SSG,
your model has been tested, now you
push your model to the TeraGrid
for the "real" computation....
After several iterations
between data prep stage
and estimation stage (the usual...), you're done!
The Census RDC network provides secure and controlled access to a large number of very detailed (and thus confidential) datasets on the U.S. population and economy.
Thank you

Wants
Potential research retailers
Second largest industry in the US
Contributes 13% of UK GDP versus 7.3% from manufacturing (2008)
Portal for all goods
(excluding direct sales from manufacturers to customers)
Global value of
$14.1 trillion
(2008)
Emerging economies including China, India and Russia are powerful engines of retail sector growth with double digit annual increases
Own brand
Key differentiation mechanism that creates competitive advantage
Contributes between 10-50% and up to 80% of sales and
transfers power from manufacturers to retailers
Design is an essential element in the process
Organizational strategy, structure and process theory
Increase in design and innovation
Reduction in lead times
Lower costs/higher margins
Control of production
Ownership of IP
Positive aspects
Industry evidence suggests
Organizational conflict
Pressure of process acceleration
Inappropriate evaluation metrics
Reduction in design potential
Internalized structure
Design
Marketing
Technology
Commercial
Externalized resources
Design agencies
Suppliers design
Theoretical framework
Understand how strategy, structure
and process determine value creation
by design - a largely intangible asset
Identifying the research question?
External consultants and
suppliers to be
interviewed to reduce bias
Semi-structured interviews selected to focus research question recognising potential researcher bias
Focus
Large retailers with significant OB propositions
Non-foods
International to increase theory testing
and generalizability
