What
are Labor Unions?
Labor Unions are an organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession formed to protect and further their rights and interests.
When
did they originate?
During the Revolutionary War; The first union to be formed in the US was the National Labor Unions.
Why
did they originate?
For legal and economic protection from exploiting employers.
Pros of Labor Unions
Provide support against big companies
Allow employers to band together to negotiate for better wages and benefits
Help protect minorities
Create jobs for hundreds of people and immigrants
Cons Of Labor Unions
Bad for the employer
Employers can be charged with unfair labor practice
Unions may push wages to unreasonable amounts
Employers can be striked against
Knights of Labor
American Federation of Labor
Largest labor union group during the first half of the 20th century. Worked on securing high wages, salaries, and working conditions.
Who
do they serve?
They serve employees, in specific immigrants, women, and other such groups of people.
Take a Stand!
Secret society of tailors from Philadelphia who promoted the social and cultural uplift of working men. Its main leader was Terence V. Powerdly.
Labor Unions are necessary because they gives workers a voice, fight for equal rights and protect employees from unfair wages, salaries, and mistreatment.
