Transcript of The Pros and Cons of Recess

The Pros and Cons of Recess
Purpose Of Recess
Gives children an opportunity to burn off energy gained from lunch
Lets children talk and play with their peers so they can develop socially and physically
Teachers are able to get a break from the children
What is Recess?
Recess: "a break period, typically outdoors, for children"
Recess is normally held before or after lunch for children in elementary and sometimes middle school.
Although there is no formal education during recess, sociologists and psychologists claim that recess is important in social and physical development in children
The Cost Of Recess
Thomas Mega Series Play Center - #38,108.99
Goliath 54" In-Ground Basketball Hoop - $599.98
Is Recess Helpful?
Reduces risk of Cardiovascular disease in children
Lowers Blood Pressure
Increases Self-Esteem
Some studies show that test scores can increase in children after recess due to a relaxation and stress-free time during recess
How Long Should Recess Last?
Typical Recess periods last around 40-45 minutes
Physical Education Classes are usually held only once a week for students so recess is key to keeping them fit and healthy
The CDC suggests that children get 60 minutes of physical activity each day
Typical Recess Activities
Is Recess Harmful?
What Grade Should Recess End?
Recess typically ends when children enter middle school
Children around this age are hitting puberty and have less of a need for physical activity
I personally believe that children should stop around this time as well
Middle school is when students are given more responsibilities and outside extracurricular activities like sports and clubs are available

Most recess time has a group of over 50 students outside at a time with not nearly as many adults to supervise the activities
Some playgrounds or recess spots may have "blind spots" where kids can bully others
Children can get hurt by falling or running into each other, improper use of recess equipment
Children are at a risk to get kidnapped if they are not being watched closely enough
Some children don't take advantage of recess
For my real life application I reminisced back on my elementary school days and how much i loved going to recess. It was a great time for me and I was bale to build closer friendships. There were times where kids would argue with one another, but not everyone is going to be able to get along. I feel like recess is necessary for proper social and physical development that could drastically effect the future of children. Even on rainy or snowy days, I was still given indoor recess which let me play games and give my brain as chance to rest in between classes. Being kept from play is only going to hurt kids and keep them from being, well, kids. I know I would want my children to be able to have fun in between classes since they are stuck at school all day. It is a nice change of pace or both the students and teachers that needs to stay part of the school day.
