Transcript of The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner by James Dashner FICTION SUMMARY The Maze Runner is about a boy named Thomas, who wakes up in a metal box in the ground. Thomas has no memories but his name. Boys pull him out of the box and Thomas learns he is in a place called the "Glade". Surrounding him are 4 huge walls almost 60 feet high. The 30 other boys living in the Glade explain to him that they are surrounded by a maze--that moves every day. Living in the Maze are hideous, dangerous creatures called "Grievers". Thomas eventually gets used to life in the Glade. Then one day the first girl ever shows up in the Glade; she is in a coma. Everything goes down hill from there. Thomas is challenged to be brave and make very important decisions if the Gladers will ever escape the Maze. CHARACTERS Protagonist: Thomas Antagonist: WICKED (the creators of the maze) Dynamic: Thomas, Alby Static: Chuck, Gally, Frypan, Ben, Minho,
Teresa, and the Grievers POINT OF VIEW 3rd person limited "Thomas was hit with a wave of confusion, blistered with panic." CONFLICTS External Internal -Walls move every night -the Grievers -The Changing -Memory vs. imagination -Save Minho and Alby? -Deciding to be a Runner THEMATIC STATEMENT Close friendships can carry you through hard times. FAVORITE QUOTE (or one of many) "WICKED is good." -Teresa I like this quote because it was one of the first things that Teresa says when she wakes from her coma. It surprised me a lot that Teresa believes this because WICKED are the people doing this to them; killing them. It is a very ironic and intriguing statement. RECOMMENDATION I thought the book was amazing. It was fast-paced, interesting, and leaves you with a huge cliff-hanger at the end. I think that any teenager or young adult would enjoy this book--boy or girl. It is 400 pages long and is a little confusing at the beginning but once you get into the action you won't want to put it down. THANK YOU :) Thomas is a young person in a unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people and no memories. He has a very hard time adjusting to life in the Glade. All of the boys in the Glade go through a lot of emotional stress and worry. When Thomas needs it most, his friend Chuck is there for him to cheer him up; make him laugh when it seems impossible. As the story progresses Chuck and Thomas's relationship grows to the point of feeling like brothers. Having that relationship really helps Thomas make it through the hard times of the Maze.
