Elements, Compounds,
and Molecules

There are over 100 different elements.
What are they?
Organic compounds contain particular elements including:
carbon
hydrogen
phosphorous
nitrogen
sulfer
All matter is made of
elements.

Elements can't be broken down any further because they are the simplest form of matter.
All foods are made of elements!
Mainly, they contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
Substances made by chemically combining two or more elements or compounds.
tarnish
combustion
flammability
cooking

The smallest amount of a compound is called a molecule.

Way to remember organic compounds:
Organic compounds always contain carbon (C).
Question 1:
Which is smallest?
A: element
B: molecule
C: compound
D: atom
Question 2
Which is an organic compound?
A: BeH2
B: C3H6
C: HPO3
D: ZnBr2
A: BeH2
B: C3H6

C: HPO3
D: ZnBr2
B is correct because there are 3 carbon (C) molecules in the formula C3H6.

Question 3
In order to make a compound, what has to happen first?
A: a physical change
B: a change in temperature
C: a change in molecule size
D: a chemical change
A: a physical change
B: a change in temperature

Question 4
Which of the folowing IS matter?
A: heat
B: air
C: energy
D: light
A: heat
B: air
C: energy
D: light
Air is matter since it takes up space and has mass. For example, look at a balloon.
