Dewey Decimal Classification System or 'the Dewey system' for short, got its name from Melvil Dewey, the man who had this great idea for organizing library collections.
Dewey numbers on the spines of books and other resources help libraries arrange like items with like so that users can find them.
Something like the way we keep the knives, forks and spoons sorted in the kitchen drawer
The dewey system has 10 main groups -
100’s
200's
300's
400's
500s
600's
700's
800's
900's
000's
Generalities
Philosophy
religion
social Sciences
language
science and math
technology
the arts and leisure activities
literature
geography and history
you don't need to memorize these groups but they are helpful to understand ...
so next time you are researching your project on bicycles (for example) ...
you'll understand why your search finds ...
nf 629.2272 = bicycle maintenance
nf 796.6 = bicycle racing
