The Six Simple Machines WEDGE Inclined Plane Screw Levers Pulley A handicap ramp is an inclined plane because it is flat and has a sloped surface. Stairs are an inclined plane because they have a sloped surface. Roofs are inclined planes because they are flat and have a sloped surface. A walkway is an inclined plane because it is flat and has a sloped surface. Bleachers are an inclined plane because they have a sloped surface. A ladder is an inclined plane because it has a sloped surface. A knife is a wedge because it is thick at one end and thin at the other. A zipper is a wedge because it pushes the two sides of the jacket apart from each other. Machine: a device that allows you to do work in a way that is easier or more effective. Scissors are a kind of first-class levers because they change the direction of the input force. Pliers are a type of first-class levers because they change the direction of the input force. Bottle openers are a type of second-class levers because they increase force but do not change direction. So, when you pull up on the bottle opener, the cap comes up also. A wheelbarrow is a type of second-class lever because it increases the force but does not change the direction. So, when you pull up on the wheelbarrow, the wheelbarrow goes up. A shovel is a type of third-class lever because it increases the distance but doesn't change the direction of the input force. A bat is a type of third-class lever because it increases the distance but does not increase the force. Wheel and Axle A screwdriver is a wheel and axle because it is made of two cylindrical objects connected together that rotate around a common axis. A steering wheel is a wheel and axle because it is made of two cylindrical objects connected together that rotate around a common axis.
