William Veroski Comparing patterns and results of decolonization in Africa and India Africa India Took more of a pacifist role in decolonization Europe had a major role in the decolonization of both nations Decolonization gained momentum during WWII when the colonizing European powers weakened due to the economic depression Conflicting cultures were forced to work together in order to reach means of independence Took up arms in order to gain independence More of a global power struggle then after WWII they helped give them independence to regulate international power distribution Created the Indian National Congress in order to drive out Colonial Britain No set government formed after the European ties were cut. Centralized government was formed with the British leaving Many different nations were involved in the colonization and decolonization Only the British were a factor in the colonization and decolonization process.

1914 - Present Africa Iran Reduced the status of woman Increased the status of woman Forms of male subjugation now illegali
i.e footbinding Forms of male subjugation were now required
i.e. woman were forced to wear charobs Woman were still prevented form attending college In both revolutions woman played an important role in causing it. Woman lost most of their rights, such as the right to divorce Woman gained rights, such as being treated equal to men China World War 1 21rst century warfare More precise World War 2 World War 1 Created an economic depression Caused the Great Depression Nationalistic movements started to rise in colonized countries Japan lost all forms of being a superpower America became the top superpower Japan became a recognized superpower Cold War began Latin American and African colonies/countries were devasted economically after the war Israel was created League of Nations was created Rise of fascism based on technology
i.e drones or ac-130 squadron based trench warfare regiment based still organized into groups of people Generals still couldn't adapt to new technological advances faster paced, due to blitzkreig success Latin America Still heavily reliant on exporting goods Nationalist Ideologies and movements Colonialism did not quite leave as much of a mark as in Africa due to Simon Bolivar and various other countries gaining independence Managed to industrialize Had close economic ties with their mother country Still a very poor country European countries let them decolonize without any tools
or means of doing so Corruption from colonialism still
evident today Indepence Struggles King Leopold's Ghost is still evident
on the Congo International cultural Interactions Eventually became economicallly
self-sufficient European countries fought over
controlling their colonies Westerner Consumer Society Europe: Nationalism was used to unite a divided country or to obtain land (i.e Italy or germany) Causes are because European countries wanted to become united and eventually show their strength to the rest of the world. Colonies: Nationalism was used to disassociate one-self from a mother country to become economically and politically self-sufficient. They want to represent themselves, not another country Economic Growth proposals War is still based on armies,
and not technology alone Filled with plans of invasion that generals followed blindly Several areas in the world stuggled for their own independence from 1914-Present Decolonization: Nations around the world (escpially Africa) sought to become independent economically and socially from mother European countries. Many included war such as Algerian independence, but some such as India's independence became independent through non violent actions.
Theology: Some countries based finding their own independent indentity on a religion. Israel was a country set aside for Jews during this time period, while Palestine was set up in correlation to Islam. These were lands set aside by govenments and had the main problem of migration to these new countries.
Country Split: After World War 1 and the Treaty of Versailles was created, Austria-Hungary was split into several new independent nations. The West has recently become the major consuming region of the world. The rise of capitalism in the USA was a major cause to this new developement. With ideas such as instant gratification, large stores began to grow to become an important part of the modern day society. Commercials and advertising have become mainstays as well. Other countries have taken advantage of this consumerism in the US to help create their own economic growth, most notably in China, Taiwan, and other areas where cheap labor is available to help fufill the growing demand of goods. Many inventions have helped to connect the world in a variety of different ways. TV, Radio, and the Internet have all allowed people to connect to each other and share cultural values. In film Hollywood and Bollywood are getting worlwide attention. International sports events such as the World Cup and Olympics paired with the TV have allowed many cultures around the world interact with one another. Cities are constantly attracting more and more tourists which gives them a vast variety of people. The world's cultures are constantly interacting with each other in todays world. 5 year plans Soviet Union- Vladamir Lenin's plan to industrialize the Soviet Union. Was based off of state sponsored factory work to help increase productiveness and improve the life of the lowest classes. Did help improve industrialization in the Soviet Union, but the life for the lowest classes remained bad, and the famine resulting from it killed millions, leading to anti-government movements.
5 year plan China- The Chinese Communist Party lead by Mao Zedong also created a state sponsored industrial growth plan. It redistributed the land between the people, and lead many of the agricultural farmers to work in larger scale projects such as steel production. However, the agricultural production could not keep up with the industry and many died due to lack of food, and this also decreased the support for the government.
