Transcript of The Illusionist

Historical Context In 1900, Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg empire which was a political trend-setter in the world of industrial modernism. Its emperor, Franz Joseph, had come to power over fifty years earlier, following the revolutions of 1848, and he would rule for another sixteen years. In the two hundred years between 1700 and 1910, the population of Vienna grew from 123,000 to well over 2 million. Vienna was a vastly heterogeneous, multi-ethnic metropolis, made up of ethnic Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Russians, Romanians, and Italians; to name just the principal groups. It was a city wrought by political tensions. By: Erin Kingsley Plot Summary A young boy, named Eisenheim, finds love in the art of magic. At the same time, he falls in love with a girl who is way above his social class, Sophie, the Duchess von Teschen. Although their parents forbid them from seeing each other, they cannot be split apart. That is, Until one day, when they are found together and Eisenheim runs away. He becomes a magician and travels the world. Sophie, being the Duchess, is set to wed the Crown Prince of Vienna. Eisenheim and Sophie are reunited at one of his own magic shows as "Eisenheim The Illusionist". Driven by love, Eisenheim uses his illusions to frame the crown Prince for murder, so that he can be with Sophie. The House of Habsburg The House of Habsburg (also known as House of Austria) was one of the most important royal houses of Europe and is best known for being an origin of all of the formally elected Holy Roman Emperors between 1438 and 1740, as well as rulers of the Austrian and Spanish Empires and several other countries. Originally from Switzerland, the dynasty first reigned in Austria, which they ruled for over six centuries. A series of dynastic marriages brought Burgundy, Spain, Bohemia, Hungary, and other territories into the inheritance. Historical Accuracies Historical Inaccuracies Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria Summary Although the story portrayed in "The Illusionist" is made-up, just about everything else about the movie was historically correct. It still shows the life styles of people in the early 1900's very well. At this time, during the romantic era, love was seen as the most important thing. Eisenheim puts love above all else, which was very common during this time period. Edward Norton:
