The Definition of Exigence
Urgency. Requiring immediate aid or action(Mish) Why the Message's Time and Place Affect the Exigence
Ex: A txt written about the need to kill all buffalo during civil war vs. now Cat Bill Veto Simple exigence
Justification of his veto
Had to be written at time of veto Randell Stross's disspointment in security
Wants fixed sooner than later before more damage can be done Achebe's Purpose? “Achebe seeks to show the Ibo culture (and as an extension. African cultures) as
complex and possessing value” Examples “One could almost write a whole chapter on him. Perhaps not a whole chapter, but a
reasonable paragraph at any rate” (171). Shows the insignificance of African culture to the white man Achebe wants readers to realize the culture is not unimportant even though it may be different The culture's value was being forgotten Achebe wanted to prevent this so he had to act before it was completely forgotten “our brothers have abandoned us and joined a stranger to soil their fatherland” (167). Okonkwo's speech but Achebe's message Achebe points out that the culture is falling apart Tie to Achebe's purpose: Achebe's Exigence: Had to revive awareness of the culture before it was completely gone. Show people that the culture had value to convince people to preserve it. The culture was dying, so Achebe had to act before it was gone for good. Why did the author write now rather than later?
