Transcript of WECHSLER INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT TEST

The overall purpose is to measure all eight areas of achievement specified by IDEA legislation as important for identifying and classifying learning disabilities.

Supportive evidence in cultivating informed decisions regarding elegibility for educational services, educational placement, or diagnosis of a specific learning disability.

Guides in designing instructional objectives and plan interventions.
The Purpose of the WIAT
ORAL LANGUAGE
Listening Comprehension - The ability to understand spoken language. Receptive language.

Listening Comprehension subtest:

Oral Discourse portion
Students listens to a CD of spoken sentences and answers questions about what they heard. Includes dialog and advertisement like narratives.

Receptive Vocabulary portion
Student listens to single words and points to the picture that matches the word.

ORAL EXPRESSION
Expressive Vocabulary portion
Student looks at a picture, listens to a definition, and then states the word that matches the picture and definition.
Oral Word Fluency portion
Student names as many objects from certain categories in 60 sec. (i.e. naming as many hobbies as one can in a minute.
Sentence Repetition portion
Student listens to the examiner state a sentence, repeats it back verbatim.
THE BREAKDOWN
The Weschler Individual Achievement Test -III Ed. assess the academic achievement of children, adolecents, college students and adults.

It is used for those individuals from 4-85 years of age.

It focuses on four academic areas/scales:
Reading
Math
Sentence Composition
Essay Composition

The WIAT-III US consists of 16 subtests: Oral Reading Fluency, Math Problem Solving, Math Fluency Addition /Subtraction /Multiplication, Early Reading Skills, Alphabet Writing Fluency, Sentence Composition and Essay Composition.

The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test–Third Edition (WIAT-III) is an individually administered measure of oral language, reading, written language, and mathematics. The WIAT-III is used in a variety of clinical, educational, and research settings, including schools, clinics, private practices, and residential treatment facilities.
