Transcript of Media (Community Policing)

Fullerton police officers, Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli respond to a call of car vandalism, where they encountered Kelly Thomas.

Thirty-five minutes later, Kelly is rushed to the hospital with severe injuries to his head, face, and neck, where he later died.

Initial reports claim Kelly was combative and uncooperative with officers.

Local media didn’t want to initially report the story because of police/media relations and reports filed by police.

Kelly’s story made national news due to citizens who witnessed the beating and demanded justice for Kelly and accountability for the officer’s actions.

You want me do donate money for a family that was so careless of their child's life? I don't think so.
Having my own "miracle" child, I have a hard time feeling sympathy for these parents if they are responsible for leaving a loaded gun (with no safety??) around the house. They deserve every moment of unrelenting pain they will feel for the rest of their lives. What a beautiful boy they had.
The Evolution of Media
By: Ben Hathaway

Media- The means of communication usually to a mass number of people.
Community Policing and the Media-The media has been a great asset to police work, But the media also has created problems for police work.
One of Sir Robert Peel's twelve principles: "The distribution of crime news is essential."

"Hue And Cry"
One of the first forms of media used in Community Policing was the "Hue and Cry" of the Frank-Pledge system.
Raise an Alarm to the Community.

If the man leaves a loaded weapon laying around the house, he's the one who deserves to be shot.
These people will pay for this incredible stupidity for the rest of their lives.

PG-13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate For Children Under 13

"A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them. A PG-13 motion picture may go beyond the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, adult activities or other elements, but does not reach the restricted R category... Any drug use will initially require at least a PG-13 rating. More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence..." (filmratings.com)
R - Restricted. Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian.

"An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. Generally, it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-rated motion pictures." (filmratings.com)
