Unit 5 Injuries in Sport
3 types of hazard
Important to make judgements on potential hazards prior to starting an activity - Use weather forecasts
Weather can cause sports fields to become dangerous to play on - Icy or waterlogged
Hot conditions - dehydration, heat exhaustion
Unsure of surroundings - walking in mountains
Extreme wet and cold - hypothermia
Inappropriate warm up or cool down
Behaviour of other participants - Wreckless challenges
‘A risk is the likelihood that a person may be harmed or suffers adverse health effects if exposed to a hazard’.

A risk assessment is a technique for identifying and controlling hazards associated with an organisation's activities.
Purpose of Risk Assessment
• Identify the level of risk posed in certain places/activities
• It must make sure any hazards are removed or minimised
• Make sure that the environment is safe for all users
Carry out and produce a risk assessment relevant to a selected sport
Explain how the risks can be minimised (contingency plans)
• The use of specialist equipment, tell us what it is and how it minimises these risks
• e.g. if weather conditions change, damaged equipment, differing skill levels of participants
Justify the use of specialist equipment to minimise the risk of injury
• Make a detailed report on how this specialist equipment reduces the risks
• e.g. Protective equipment such as gum shield or shin pads, padded posts or posts inserted directly into the ground rather than having a base at ground level
• Wet floor on a squash court
• Spillage of chemicals while cleaning the swimming pool

How injury can occur
Example relating to a sport
E.g. A hamstring strain is a common injury involving a tear in one or more of the muscles. The role of the hamstring muscles is to bend the knee and move the thigh backward at the hip (extend the hip). During sports if you have not warmed up correctly, you could have a sharp pain in the back of the leg during exercise, this normally happens during sprinting or in sudden, sharp movements. This happens often in sports with a sudden movement, such as: football, hockey and rugby. You could still pull your hamstring even if you are warmed up fully due to the impact on the body these sports have, as well as during long distance running and over training. A hamstring strain could cause swelling and bruising.
