Cats in the Ancient World

A typical Maneki Neko.

A common myth is that a black cat crossing ones path bring bad luck due to it being the colour of death. Cats having nine lives is another, stemming from their perceived durability and ability to survive falls. In Japan the Maneki neko cat is believed to bring good fortune due to a legend of a man saved from a lightning strike by being drawn to a sitting cat. It is often seen outside Japanese businesses to draw in money. However, in the middle ages cats were believed to be devil creatures resulting in mass cat killings.

Cat Mythology

A 9,500 year old grave in Shillourokambos, Cyprus, containing human and cat skeletons suggests the earliest known domestication of cats. This leads to the belief that cats were most likely domesticated in the middle east, around the time of the development of agriculture with the need to exterminate mice. Soon after they are believed to have been brought to Cyprus and Egypt and later introduced to European countries by the Roman empire.

In ancient Egypt cats were considered sacred and were associated with the goddesses Bastet and Isis. Many ancient religions believed that cats were exalted souls, companions or guides for humans. They believed that they were all-knowing but mute so as not to influence human decisions. Norse mythology shows Freyja, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility, riding a chariot drawn by her two feline companions.
