Move By Step
Neighbor Tone
Appoggiatura
Step followed by Step in same direction
Step followed by Step in opposite direction
Always back to original note
Fills in two consecutive tones in the same voice separated by a 3rd
Suspension
Retardation
Same tone followed by Step Up
Move By Combination
Neighbor Group
Escape Tone + Appogiatura
or
Upper and Lower Neighbors
"Surrounds" the original tone, then returns back to it.
Also known as "Cambiata"
Anticipation
Anticipates a note from the next chord
Pedal Point
Starts as a chord tone, becomes an NCT, then becomes a chord tone again.
Etc.
Can move by Step or Leap
Do not completely fit the other two categories
Stretches across multiple chords.
Bass remains the same, new chords built over it
