We realized :
How fragile and beautiful a life can be.
How lucky we are to have a loving and supportive home.
How badly we want to help YESS continue on their journey.
2,000 homeless youth per year in Edmonton alone.
Aged 15-18.
They leave home because of abuse, addictions, and other home oppressions.
Youth
A Simple History
YESS was founded in 1978
By Deb Cautley and a number of social workers
They noticed a major lapse in government services between adults and children.
"If you're under 14 you are considered a child, but as soon as you reach 18 you belong with the adults. See the problem?"
What does YESS stand for?
Y - youth
E - empowerment
S - support
S - services
Trauma: a deeply distressing or disturbing experience.
Eg- abuse, addiction, rape, etc.
This has alot to do with neural pathways...
YESS provides trauma support using:
1-on-1 counselling sessions
Soothing paint colours
Home-made quilts and home-cooked meals
People facing experiences just like themselves
Neuropathways:
Mostly grow between ages 15-18
Learn more when you are younger
Absorb information like a sponge
until you become an adult
Trauma Recovery
YESS takes advantage of this and:
Breaks the cycle of bad behaviour
Corrects wrong behaviour and turns it into good behaviour
Teachs you how to cope with adversities in a variety of ways
Services
YESS has numerous services in order to make their youth feel at ease like:
Revenue

19% from the Alberta Government
7% from the United Way
74% must come from contributors (individuals or major donors)
YESS runs on $5 million each year in order to stay afloat...
The $5,000 Grant...
YESS has decided that if we win this amazing grant they will purchase...
A new commercial fridge!
Thank you for watching! We would also like to thank:
Shannon Goralski and Emily Keating from YESS for providing us with the inspiration for this presentation.
